While we are not a developmental preschool, we do our best to be inclusive to students with exceptional needs that are within our scope of practice. If your child already has a 504, IEP, or IFSP, we will be happy to implement the accommodations your child requires to the best of our abilities.
We utilize a Multi-Tiered Support System (MTSS) that pulls from Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) programs that are commonly used in elementary schools. These tiers represent leveled intervention strategies that grow more targeted with each tier. Tier 1 is a universal classroom management strategy that is implemented in every class for all children. This can include strategies such as clear communication of expectations, job charts, preferential seating, fidget bands on chair legs, etc. This tier is implemented in the classrooms without parent notification. Tier 2 includes (but is not limited to) strategies such as sign language, visual schedules, sensory toys, weighted vests and blankets, and noise-cancelling headphones. Parents will be notified after Tier 2 interventions are implemented by a teacher. Permission slips for tier 2 use is handed out at enrollment. Tier 3 strategies will never be used in our school.
Because we are not a developmental preschool, and our teachers are not certified special education teachers, we do have a scope of practice that we must abide by in order for our classrooms to be successful, and for our school to accommodate everyone with fidelity. This means that we have parameters when accepting children with special needs. Each classroom has a 25% threshold for children with special needs. So if the classroom has a capacity of 15 children, 3 are able to be children with special needs.
